What is the suspension polymerization?
In this suspension polymerization process, the monomers are water-insoluble and polymerized monomers are suspended in the form of fine droplets over the solvent they are stabilized and prevented from coalescing by using suitable water-soluble colloids surface-active agents and by steering. The initiators are monomer soluble.
There will be a continuous aqueous phase that acts as an efficient heat transfer medium so it is exothermally well controlled.
Polymerization proceeds to a hundred percent conversion rate and the product are obtained as a spherical bead or pearl.
Isolation of the polymer or product becomes very easy as it involves only the filtration of beads and removal of surface-active agents or colloids by water washing the washed and dried product of polymer can be used for molding process and it can be dissolved in certain medium to be used as adhesive or coatings.
It requires a longer duration for higher conversion it is suitable for free radical and polycondensation polymerization.
Advantages of the suspension polymerization
- Since the water is used as a solvent this method is economical.
- The isolation of the product is very easy and the products are very pure.
Disadvantages of the suspension polymerization
- This method is only applicable to only water-insoluble monomers.
- Control of particle size is difficult.
Why the suspension polymerization process is used for?
suspension polymerization process used to make a number of thermoplastic polymers such as commercially widely used such PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and many other resins as well.
What kind of the initiators are used in the suspension polymerization?
Usually, the initiator is used in the suspension polymerization is Benzoyl, t-butyl, diacetyl, and lauroyl peroxide these are the initiators are used in the suspension polymerization.
What are the polymerization techniques?
These are the polymerization techniques addition polymerization, Bulk polymerization, solution polymerization, Suspension polymerization, Emulsion polymerization these are the polymerization techniques that predominantly used.
What are the two types of the polymerization
Two types of the polymerization are Chain reaction (addition) and second type is step reaction (condensation) these are the two main types of polymerization.
